  • In the yogic context, meditation, or dhyana, is defined as a state of pure consciousness. This pure consciousness is the self beyond all the chatter of the mind and the sensations caused by pain or discomfort in the body.

    An exquisite methodology exists within the yoga tradition that is designed to reveal the interconnectedness of every living thing.

    Meditation is the actual experience of this union, and a state we find ourselves in when we go deep within and connect with the source of who we are.

    It is not something we do, it is where we find ourselves after we have progressively and systematically moved inwards through the Koshas, or the layers of our being.

    Yoga is the calming of the fluctuations of the mind

    Meditation can only be experienced when the body and mind are still and quiet.

    This mental stillness is created by bringing the body, mind, and senses into balance, which, in turn, relaxes the nervous system. Patanjali goes on to explain that meditation begins when we discover that our never-ending quest to possess things and our continual craving for pleasure and security can never be satisfied. When we finally realize this, our external quest turns inward, and we have shifted into the realm of meditation.

    Meditation has always been central to all spiritual practices and its benefits have always been known to yogis. Yet many of us still struggle the “how to”. Lacking the tools and the dedication necessary to integrate a regular meditation practice into our lives, thus leaving us without the nectar of yoga. Learning to meditate allows our asana practice to evolve and grow. It makes our lives happier and more fulfilling. Meditation is what allows us to align to our true purpose with insightful living.

    Learning meditation is about coming home. To that silent blissful center of yourself and to live from there. In the state of meditation, self-realization spontaneously unfolds as well as clarity in your life.

    Why meditate?

    During most of our waking lives, our minds are engaged in a continuous internal dialogue. This is exhausting as every thought is a command to the body. The mind loses focus and the body becomes weary.

    Many of our thoughts are useless or negative.

    This clogged mental state prevents us from seeing clearly. It is wasted energy and tiring.

    Meditation is medicine. During meditation, you focus your attention and eliminate the stream of jumbled thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress.

    A large body of research has established that having a regular meditation practice produces tangible benefits for mental and physical health, including:

    More energy

    Decreased blood pressure and hypertension

    Lowered cholesterol levels

    Reduced production of “stress hormones,” including cortisol and adrenaline

    More efficient oxygen use by the body

    Increased production of the anti-aging hormone DHEA
